By reading this you must promise to never tell anyone else.  This is the #1 secret that the largest diet industry marketers do not want the public to know.  Why?  Because once you know the secret, you and others like you will not pay money for their "SPECIAL DIET PLAN".

Here is the secret:  Are you ready?  This is it!  The secret is that the type of diet you use does not matter -- any diet that restricts your calories will make you lose weight.

All diets (low -carb, low-fat, low-protein, low-glycemic index, etc., etc.) have one thing in common; they all lower calories and therefore induce initial weight loss.  There is no need for these special types of diets.  A balanced diet will help you lose weight and you are far more likely to stay on it.  Furthermore, a diet of your own design built around healthy foods is a diet you can live with the rest of your life.  That is the #1 key to weight loss.

Energy Balance (sometimes called caloric balance) is what determines if you lose, gain or maintain weight.

Calorie intake:
ˇAll from the food you eat.

Burning Calories:
ˇYour body burns calories to keep it alive and functioning.
ˇYour body also burns calories during exercise.
ˇYou burn calories to process the food you eat.  Some food takes very little energy to process and other foods take significantly more to break down for use.

Too many calories = fat gain

Energy balance = no loss - no gain

Slightly less calories = good fat loss

Too few calories for too long of a time = homeostasis slowing down the body and keeping the weight as constant as possible.  Loss of muscle.

Severe calorie restriction for too long (starvation) = rapid weight loss with the body tearing itself apart for survival with many medial complications.  Long term results in death

So what does this mean to you?  It means, to lose weight and keep it off, simply find a diet style you can live with that reduces calories.  Hopefully you will choose one that provides good nutrition.
